John Henes
Mini-Biography
- US Army field band (had a friend who
was interested in Alexander Technique, took lessons, and
became an Alexander teacher after service)
- After leaving the Army, John took an
entire summer of daily or bi-daily Alexander lessons.
- John attended Indiana Univ. and
studiee with Louis Davidson (Philadelphia Orchestra)
- He moved to Chicago in 1976 to study
with Jacobs, Herseth, and Chicowicz.
- Played principal with the Charlston
Symphony?
- After completing his Alexander
training with William Carrington (one of the first
generation of Alexander teachers), he was invited by
Chicowicz to lecture to 250-300 Northwestern Univ. music
students.
- Chicowicz knew of Alexander's work and
admired concepts of "end gaining" and
"means whereby" because that is the way he
taught.
- John later subbed with the Chicago
Lyric Opera, auditioned at the first opening, and played
principal, but disliked it because of the grueling
schedule and exhaustion (2 rehearsals and 1 performance
or 2 performances and 1 rehearsal every day during the
season)
