- Commit to the music before you start.
- Convey your enjoyment and commitment
to the audience.
- Convey confidence through your
physical stance and body language.
- Own the music.
- Be one with the music.
- Use slow breathing (in through the
nose and out through the mouth) to counteract performance
anxiety.
- Buzz a phrase or pitch on the
mouthpiece.
- Sing a phrase or pitch.
- Each phrase needs to have momentum and
forward motion.
- Do not rush rhythms at slow tempos.
- Sustain the energy of each phrase
until its end.
- When seated, be ready to stand.
- When standing, be ready to run.
- Sustain sound pressure at low volume
levels.
- Keep your weight on the balls of your
feet, lean forward into the note and phrase.
- Breathe in and out from your center
(as though you are lying on the floor).
- Do not raise your shoulders when
inhaling.
- Work backwards through a phrase from
end to start (this will teach you where the line is
going).
